A full gut renovation of a penthouse apartment in Manhattan allowed designer, Gregory Hitchcock, an opportunity to adapt the space to suit the client’s needs, both functionally and aesthetically.
The kitchen space is defined by the use of heat-treated oak throughout, bringing warmness to a great space, that is complimented by light etched glass doors on the back wall, as well as white porcelain counters, provided by SapienStone and fabricated and installed by Faithful Countertops. The model used throughout the kitchen is Maxima 2.2. By using this model, Gregory had the freedom to create a kitchen truly tailored to the client’s requirements.
A few interesting points presented themselves throughout the project:
Due to a fire exit along the back wall, panel doors were implemented, hiding an otherwise unsightly feature, as well as allowing for storage to be incorporated and keeping the apartment to code.
Plumbing passes through the kitchen to reach the rooftop hot tub, which caused an intriguing design challenge to Gregory. The considerate design of the column minimizes the space taken by pipework, creating an eye-catching piece that takes the island vertically, acting as an anchor to its large horizontal presence.
The island features a large overhang for the countertop, which can bring about the problem of stability. To overcome this, steel bars were placed within the counter, reinforcing the integrity and allowing a free-floating feeling. By engineering the steel bars to be hidden, style wasn’t compromised.
Both bathrooms have a distinct, unique style. The master bathroom is masculine, incorporating dark colors with bold lines. The vanity perfectly complements this aesthetic, in a magma finish. The bright and airy guest bathroom has warmth injected to it with the vanity in a rough walnut finish. The orange undertones of the wood veneer perfectly compliment the blue and white tile chosen by the architect and client.
The project also included living room and foyer storage, both designed with function and style in mind, thoughtfully tying them back to the kitchen. The foyer is in a heat-treated oak finish, whilst the under-TV storage is in Café etched glass.
Finally, a large storage piece was created for the master bedroom. This was completed in an echo cement finish to compliment the natural light in the room. This finish is hand applied, meaning each project is completely unique.
This project was a collaboration with the architecture firm, Rodriquez Studio Architecture. The homeowner was also actively involved with the entire selection process.
